What to do, where to go:

Ellsworth is considered the crossroads of Downeast Maine. The apartments are 18 miles from Ellsworth, and they are convenient to much of the picturesque coast of Maine and Maritime Canada. The apartments themselves are located on Maine State Route 186, a National Scenic Byway.

View of Bar Harbor

Many people enjoy visiting Bar Harbor, Cadillac Mountain, and Acadia National Park. By road, Bar Harbor is 38 miles from the apartments; however, a small ferry runs from Winter Harbor, six miles from the apartments, to Bar Harbor. All told, the trip is about 12 miles. You may take your bicycle with you for a nominal fee, rent a bicycle at a nearby stand at Bar Harbor, or you can take the free Bar Harbor bus service. Downeast Windjammer Cruises operates the ferry and also provides excursions on a variety of other vessels.

Visit the Downeast Windjammer Cruises web site.

Only some eight miles from the apartments, Schoodic Point is a little known but most beautiful part of Acadia National Park. The point juts out into the Atlantic Ocean and provides views of unusual glacial rock formations.

Frasier Point is on the route to Schoodic Point. The park is seven miles from the apartments and has a wonderful view and picnicking facilities.

Schoodic Point and Frasier Point is a pleasant local bicycle tour. Bike and kayak rentals are available locally.

Communities immediately surrounding the apartment location include South Gouldsboro, Summer Harbor, Winter Harbor, Birch Harbor, Prospect Harbor, and Gouldsboro Point. At the beginning of the 20th century, these communities were centers of commerce associated with the fishing and lumber industries. The communities now rely mainly on lobster fishing and tourism for income.

A visit to Campobello Island, location of Franklin D. Roosevelt's summer camp, is a pleasant and enjoyable day trip of 72 miles, one-way. Along the way you pass through Lubec, the Easternmost point in the United States, and you can visit Maine's Quoddy Head State Park.

Campobello Island is part of New Brunswick; however, the summer camp is now an international park supported by both Canada and the United States. In the summertime, the floral gardens are a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity.

The West Quoddy Head lighthouse is situated on the easternmost point in the mainland United States. The first lighthouse on the spot was constructed in 1808 by order of President Thomas Jefferson. Construction was poor, and the present 49-foot brick tower was erected in 1858. The tower is painted in a red and white candy stripe pattern, common in Canada but unusual in the United States. The red and white pattern makes the tower more visible in snowy weather.

A visit to the West Quoddy Head lighthouse can easily be coupled with a visit to Campobello.

Visit the West Quoddy Head web site.
